WIN New Stained Gold EP from Affairs
It’s competition time again here on Quasar. Tune in to The Music Truffler on Saturday night between 7 and 9pm or Tuesday between 10 and midnight to hear how you can win one of three signed EPs from Affairs. Kathy will be playing a track from their latest EP, Stained Gold, and will let you know how you can win one of them.
With a run of 3 singles: Blood Science, Brothers and Play, Manchester band AFFAIRS have established themselves on the UK Indie music scene and now come with their debut EP Stained Gold featuring the single Runaway. All tracks are produced by Suede, White Lies, Courteeners and Pulp producer Ed Buller and recorded at the Kinks’ legendary Konk Studios. Lead track Runaway explores the theme of intoxication and hazy thrill of a chemically fuelled night out. This typically youthful celebration of freedom ties into the feeling of ‘staying young’ that many feel in their early twenties. ‘In face of youth, I see a runaway’ sings James Robinson in his signature vocal style.
Other tracks on the EP include previous single Play with drummer Michael Bradnam’s infections drum pattern and lyric about how we hide behind a facade or ‘play games’, new track Out Of The Deep, with its highly dramatic and massive chorus with a lyric about family bonds touched by the tragedy of mental illness and to close the EP, last year’s single Brothers, an up-tempo positive song about male relationships.
The artwork was created by graphic artist Mathew Cooper (Caribou, Wild Beasts & Arctic Monkeys) and continues a cohesive visual theme initiated on previous artwork.
The band met at Hull University and their influences are wide and varied with lead vocalist James Robinson’s parents being fully professional opera singers involved in Evita and Chess. Dan Parker (guitar/synth) studied composition, specialising in Sound Art & Surrealist Music, Michael Bradnam (Drums) initially played jazz alongside Liam Grindel (guitar/vox) who’d also done various stints in metal bands, while Jack Richards (bass/bass synth) teamed up with Dan Parker for their Jack Daniels Indie Music Show on Jam Radio when both at Hull University.
